Dear Reader,

So, have you adjusted to writing 2012 rather than 2011? We always seem to get caught off guard when the new year begins, yet year after year, another year ends and another one begins. Yet, this year is different. For 100 years, this community of faith has been ministering in Scottsdale and we celebrate God’s faithfulness to us over those hundred years (remember the dates, March 16-18, for a great weekend full of events to commemorate this occasion). 

As we celebrate God’s faithfulness over the past 100 years, let us also remember that God’s faithfulness will carry us onward for an exciting, life-altering future.  He is not done working through the life of this church. He has done great things in the past and, as one of the songs we sing on Sundays proclaims, Greater things are yet to come. I invite you to join us this year as we celebrate the ongoing journey of following our great Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He has done great things and He will do even greater things in the days ahead. Thanks for making that a reality. Please join us for the ride!

Sunday, January 15 Marathon Sunday

Just a quick reminder that due to the Rock-n-Roll marathon happening on Sunday, January 15th we are having our worship service at 4PM that afternoon. Of course, if you try to get to the church that morning, you may find yourself having a different kind of worship experience in your car as you get stopped by thousands of runners on the road. 

Parada del Sol - February 11

You will want to join us on Saturday, February 11th at Scottsdale’s own Parada del Sol. The Parada celebrates Arizona’s 100 years of statehood and culture and it’s an “Old Town” Scottsdale tradition. 

FBC Scottsdale will have a float, musicians, and dancers celebrating our own 100 Years of Loving God and Loving People.

The Parada begins at 10:00 am. The parade route travels north on Scottsdale road from Oak Street to Indian School Road. So pull up your boots, grab your cowboy hat, and enjoy a few hours in our beautiful city.

Did You Know?  20% of 8th graders report that they have tried marijuana.
 
We would like to invite all of you and your friends to join us for a mini workshop that will be put on by DrugFreeAZ.org on January 22nd from 6pm to 8pm in room C1.
 
Some of the information that will be covered during the workshop includes:  specific drug threats for our youth, warning signs of use, helpful tips for parents to talk to their children along with steps to take if their child is using.

Valley Christian Center

Thank you to everyone who brought cookies for Valley Christian Center's Christmas Party. We had approximately 75 dozen cookies, filled about 90 cookie plates and covered them with plastic wrap for seniors and other needy people to take with them after the party. They were really appreciated.
Food Boxes:  We still need some volunteers to help with paper work for the food boxes given out each Wednesday morning. We are giving out from 50 to 90 boxes each day. If you would be willing to help from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm . . . one Wednesday a month,  please call Virginia Soudriette  602-956-2464.
 
Missionary Speakers - January 9

Our Joyce Reed Mission Circle will be hosting Lori and Matt Mann - American Baptist Missionaries in Thailand and Laos at their monthly meeting on Monday, January 9.  The meeting is at 9:30 a.m. in room C-2. Everyone (men and women) who is interested in hearing about their mission work in Laos is invited. Refreshments will be served by hostesses Essie McGlothlin and Dorothy Melzer and the program will start at 10:00 a.m.

Wednesday Night Bible Study


Beginning Wednesday, January 04, we start a new series taking a look at the life of Christ through Mark’s gospel. Mark’s gospel is a quick-hitting, exciting account that helps each of us gain a greater understanding of what Christ accomplished through His life.  If you are interested in getting to know Christ better, then Mark’s gospel is a great place to start. Please join us on Wednesday nights in the chapel from 6:30-8. I promise that you won’t be disappointed.
 
Souper Bowl Party, February 05

Mark this date, time, and location on your calendar, Sunday, February 05, 4PM, C1.  Now, that you have it on your calendar, all you need to do is show up for a football game viewing party at the church. Due to copyright laws, we are not allowed to use the name of the game in any of our advertising, but let’s just say it is the BIG GAME that happens at the end of the professional football season and people who don’t like the game watch the game because of the commercials that happen during the game.  We are tail-gating in the south parking lot and watching the BIG GAME in C-1.  Please bring the following: canned goods (hence the name of the party, "Souper Bowl"), that will go towards our Chaneni House ministry or an area food bank, your own grill (if your food needs to be grilled), you own food to share, and your lawn chairs. The church will provide plates, plasticware, and something to drink. Hope to see you there!
 
 



Financial Update

Thank you for your generous giving in December. You decreased our deficit for the year by 23%!

As many of you know, we have a large mortgage ($24,000) due each month for the building project we completed several years ago. We are starting the Momentum Project this month to focus on reducing the mortgage over the next three years. We currently pay $20,000 each month in interest for this mortgage. If we can significantly reduce our principle loan amount, we can greatly reduce our payment and the interested paid each month.

We are hosting small group meetings from January 22 until February 8 to explain (1) the church’s vision, (2) the effects of paying down the mortgage, and (3) how we can work together as a community to support the vision and pay off the mortgage. The Elder Board will be calling to help schedule a time that works best for you. December at Chaneni House
 
It happens in a blink – generosity shared, serving hands, requests spoken, prayers answered.  It’s been a busy month at Chaneni House – here’s a sampling of what happened behind the scenes.
 
On a Sunday afternoon, a fantastic group of people jumped up and put on a new roof on the Chaneni warehouse (garage); right before two days of heavy rains. Two families graciously provided the funds for the roofing materials.
 
·         Jan Tannenbaum and Marge Couch created Christmas swags for the families.
 
·         Bundles of clothes, toys, household items, and warm weather items were donated.
 
·         Bonnie Rains made “Pocket Pets” for the children which were given out the week before Christmas. 
 
·         A “surprise” donation, more than 30, warm, long-sleeved shirts arrived – they made nice Christmas gifts for the homeless guys.
 
·         A Sunday School class supplied and filled many hygiene bags; even including luxuries like shaving cream and deodorant.
 
·         Lots of rice, pasta, cereal, tuna, and peanut butter were provided to keep the food boxes going out into our community.
 
·         The Joyce Reed Circle prepared gift bags for the children at Thanksgiving. 
 
And because of YOU, the more than 40 families that visit the Chaneni House each time it is open, experienced the message of Christmas – LOVE. 
Give freely and spontaneously. Don't have a stingy heart. The way you handle matters like this triggers God, your God's, blessing in everything you do, all your work and ventures. There are always going to be poor and needy people among you. So I command you: Always be generous, open purse and hands, give to your neighbors in trouble, your poor and hurting neighbors.  Deuteronomy 15:10-11
 
 
100 Year Centennial

Our centennial planning comes in the midst of extraordinary times. Not unlike 100 years ago, we face both enormous challenges and opportunities. And to celebrate with individuals that we are connected with, family now, which have gathered together and woven their lives, their faith and their commitments to building His kingdom in south Scottsdale, will do our souls good.  Our heritage is rich with stories of God’s love, His message of hope and His faithfulness during times of struggles, growth, prosperity and economic depression. 
 
Much has been asked about how the church was started. Chaplain Winfield Scott is often looked upon as the founder of our church. Actually, Chaplain Scott died on October 19, 1910, some two years and eight months before the church was started. There is little doubt, however, that the famous chaplain, a visionary, was the spiritual founder of our church. Scott had made a will in 1904, but just a few day before his death wrote a special testament to the people of Scottsdale.
 
“I leave to you my work in Scottsdale. I had planned to do much this winter with you, but God has called me. If you take this work and do it, and enlarge it as God gives you strength, you will receive my blessing and His.”It was Verner A. Vanderhoof who read Scott’s “one last bequest” and performed the exhortations to give great assistance to the founding move of First Baptist Church of Scottsdale.

On Wednesday, June 8, 1912,  Rev. T.F. McCourtney, Rev. & Mrs. J. Harvey Deere (pastor First Baptist Church of Phoenix) and W.B. Getsinger  met at the Vanderhoof  home on Bryan Ranch with Rev. & Mrs. William Wilbur, Rev. & Mrs. Limon Trumbull, and Mr. & Mrs. Hans Weaver to arrange a program for the organization of a Baptist Church for Scottsdale. A motion was made to meet in the school house in Scottsdale the following Sunday at 3:00 pm to organize the church.
On Sunday, June 12, 1912, these individuals and many more from Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Tempe, met and organized the First Baptist Church of Scottsdale. At a later date, Rev. Limon T. Trumbull was called as the first pastor.  

The services of First Baptist Church of Scottsdale were held in a red brick schoolhouse for the first five years. Then, the  membership decided it was time to build a church to hold their services.

Sometime between 1910 and 1916, the Vanderhoofs had purchased a six-acre tract of land at Brown Avenue and Indian School Road, from Mrs. Winfield (Helen) Scott, with the understanding that when a church was ready to be built, the Vanderhoofs would donate 2 lots to the church as a building site.
In the midst of World War I, building for the new church began in November 1917.  Vanderhoof, a laid-off missionary, supervised the building plans and construction.  On March 3, 1918, the new church building was dedicated and a grateful congregation celebrated.  And just like today, people connected with each other - sharing potlucks together on the lawn, grew in the study of God’s Word, and served through Vacation Bible Schools, women’s mission circles, youth meetings and shared the Gospel message throughout the community. 

As we commemorate this event, our celebration is focused on God’s faithfulness, provision and unending love for His people.  Join us over the next few months as we celebrate 100 Years of Loving God and Loving People.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen.  Ephesians 3:20, 21
